The 6 Best K’gari Tours From Hervey Bay & Rainbow Beach

Freshwater lake in K'gari with white sand beach

Not sure how to visit K’gari? This guide compares the best K’gari tours from Hervey Bay and Rainbow Beach, from one to four days duration, including coach tours, self-drive and boat options.

K’gari (formerly Fraser Island) is a must visit for many travellers on the east coast of Australia. This large UNESCO World Heritage-listed sand island isn’t just somewhere you can drive to in your regular 2WD vehicle, so getting there takes a bit of planning. But in my experience, it’s absolutely worth the effort!

Choosing our K’gari tour mostly came down to budget and time constraints. Ideally, we prefer to explore at our own pace and under our own steam – and for the right price, you can hire a 4WD to explore on your own. However, with no previous 4WD experience, especially on sand, we decided the best route for us would be to join a guided tour.

We hit K’gari towards the end of our time in Australia and both funds and amount of days we had to spend there was limited. As a result, we picked the K’gari Explorer One Day Tour – a great way to see the highlights in a short trip. With more budget and time, we’d have likely picked a longer trip on a self-drive tour.

In this article, I’ve compared the six best K’gari tours on the market to help you decide which one’s right for you!

Best for those with limited time or on a tight budget, this K’gari Explorer day tour is the best way to see the highlights of K’gari in one day. We were pretty short on cash by the time we got to K’gari, so chose this option to see as much as possible in a short space of time.

Departing early from either Rainbow Beach or Hervey Bay, take a whistle-stop tour across the island. You’ll stop at at Lake Mckenzie, one of the loveliest freshwater swimming spots I’ve ever dipped my toes in, and stroll along the boardwalk at the beautiful Wanggoolba Creek.

After a filling buffet lunch, the journey continues along 75 Mile Beach, with stops at the Maheno Shipwreck and The Pinnacles, a collection of ancient, vibrantly coloured sand dunes. Finally, the tour stops by Eli Creek, where you have time to walk (or float) along the crystal clear water until you reach the ocean again!

For a Rainbow Beach departure, I’d recommend booking accommodation at Freedom Hostel – the tour’s official starting point.

The sights you’ll see on this tour are similar to the one day tour, but at a more relaxed pace – plus a few extras. You’ll also get to spend a magical night on the island of K’gari, in comfortable hotel accommodation!

In addition to the one-day tour highlights, you’ll also visit the most easterly point on the island, Indian Heads; and take a dip in the Champagne Pools, a natural jacuzzi! You’ll also have the optional chance to hike 4km across the Hammerstone Sandblow to Lake Wabby, making your way across the sands and through the forest to lakeside scenery.

Accommodation is at the K’gari Beach Resort, a beachfront hotel complex with swimming pool, restaurant, bar and general store. Double, triple and single occupancy rooms are available. All rooms have a private en-suite bathroom, TV and balcony/deck. Dinner, drinks and additional snacks are not included in the price of the tour.

Looking for a more adventurous way to explore K’gari? How about driving along the sandy beach in your very own 4WD vehicle, with a secluded overnight campout!

Confident drivers can join a ‘tag-along’ tour, self-driving a 4WD vehicle along the sands of 75 Mile Beach. We saw a couple of these tours go past and it actually looked like loads of fun! If we were going back to K’gari with a bit more money in our bank accounts, this is definitely the tour we’d go for.

Aimed at 18-35 year olds, this tour’s all about the social, group experience. Camping out under the stars by the beach, visitors pitch in to help with the cooking and cleaning at camp before sharing stories with a beer or two (BYO alcohol). The tour visits the same highlights as the K’gari Explorer day tour, but the longer tour allows for more time at some of the more popular spots.

If you have more time to spare, there’s a three-day version of this tour visiting additional locations on the island.

K’gari Explorer 4 Day Experience

Price: From $1,022pp (based on two sharing – with a single traveller option from $1,351pp)

If you’re happy to spend a bit more to slow down your K’gari experience on an immersive island stay, this three night tour option could be for you!

The package includes a pre-tour night at the 4* Kingfisher Bay resort, before joining the two day K’gari Explorer tour to explore the island. Once the tour’s complete, you’ll head back to Kingfisher Bay for a post-tour night to relax, with optional extras including bush tucker tastings, spa experiences and marine cruises. You can also upgrade your package to include the Illumina light show at Kingfisher Bay.

(For even more time on the island, there’s also a five-day version of this tour with an extra night at Kingfisher Bay resort)

For an alternative option to a 4WD tour, the more remote western side of K’gari is also accessible by amphibious vehicle. Heading along the Great Sandy Strait alongside the island, look out for marine life including dolphins and turtles.

Stopping at both Wathumba and Bowarrady creeks on the island, you’ll have the chance to enjoy walking along the beach and sand dunes. Water activities including kayaking, tubing and snorkelling with turtles are on offer, or you can simply relax on the sands, keeping an eye out for wild dingoes, birds and even reptiles darting around the tree-lined shore.

During the months of July-October, humpback whale sightings are almost guaranteed!

For a shorter exploration of the marine life of K’gari, a morning boat tour shares the unique vantage point of seeing the island from the water! It’s also the cheapest option – so if you’re not too bothered about actually going onto the island, this could be the budget-friendly tour for you.

During the day, you’ll be on the lookout for dolphins and turtles that frequent the water. Keep your eyes on the shoreline too, as it’s a great way to spot dingoes roaming on the beach. Swimming stops are included, and you can also make use of the boom net and on-board AquaMat while the boat’s on the move.

K’gari Tours FAQ

Where should I join a K’gari tour from?

Most K’gari tours will depart from either Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach. I’d recommend choosing your tour first, and booking accommodation accordingly. Some tours have the option to depart from either location.

We chose Rainbow Beach for our tour, as the departure point is much more central, and the journey to K’gari is quicker than from Hervey Bay.

What’s the best K’gari tour for kids?

The K’gari Explorer tours are suitable for children over the age of one, and the one day tour is the easiest and most cost-effective way to take the kids to K’gari.

Accommodation on the two day tour is double or triple share, so for more than 2 adults and 1 child, you’ll need to book two double rooms or contact the operator directly.

Are K’gari tours accessible for people with disabilities?

Most transport and activities on the K’gari tours are not wheelchair accessible, and not recommended for those with mobility impairments. If you’re not sure if the tour will be able to accommodate your needs, I’d recommend contacting the operator directly before you book.

Do K’gari tours cater to dietary requirements?

Vegetarian and limited vegan options are available on most K’gari tours that offer meals. For other dietary requirements, contact the tour operator.

Will I see wildlife on a K’gari tour?

Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed on any tour, but there’s a good chance of seeing at least reptiles and bird life, as well as potential dingoes, dolphins, turtles and whales (seasonal).
