The 5 Best Daintree River Wildlife Cruises for Crocodile Spotting

Large saltwater crocodile on a riverbank in the Daintree

Want to see wildlife in the world’s most ancient rainforest? I’ve compared the five best wildlife cruises in the Daintree Rainforest to help you choose which to take!

The world’s most ancient rainforest is home to one of the world’s most fascinating apex predators. The saltwater crocodile can grow to up to 7m long, and you sure as heck wouldn’t want to get in a fight with one. They can live for more than 70 years, although during the 1970s, they were hunted to near extinction in Queensland. Thankfully, populations have grown since then, and around 70 crocodiles now call the Daintree River home.

Seeing salties in the wild was a major driver of our visit to Far North Queensland, and the safest way to do this is to take a Daintree River wildlife tour. But it’s not just about crocodiles – there are also some amazing birdwatching opportunities, as well as the chance to see snakes, fish and other creatures along this wild and natural stretch of river.

With multiple options on offer for your Daintree River wildlife cruise, I’ve compared the top five options to see how they stack up. Read on to discover which tour is right for you, and for my own recommendation of the best tour to take!

This is the tour I’d recommend to anyone wanting the best chance of seeing crocodiles up close in the Daintree River!

We joined a Solar Whisper departure in the morning, on our way back to Cairns after glamping in the Daintree Rainforest. We’d actually already taken one tour further up in Cape Tribulation, but in my humble view, you can never see enough saltwater crocodiles.

On the tour, we saw five crocodiles in total, including two large males, two females and a juvenile croc hiding amongst the mangroves. Solar Whisper boasts a 99% success rate for seeing crocodiles, and offer another tour at no extra charge if you’re not lucky enough to spot any. Our guide, Marc, was super knowledgable about the river and its inhabitants.

The zero emissions boat is whisper quiet, which means you’re able to get closer to wildlife without disturbing it, and the on-board Croc Cam is a neat additional feature for a zoomed-in look. I also really appreciated how the bench seating arrangement meant that there’s no such thing as a bad seat on board.

Bruce Belcher’s Daintree River Cruises

Price: From A$40 per adult / A$19 per child
Duration: 1hr
Departure time: 8:30am, 9:30am, 12pm, 2pm, 3pm (no tours operate during February)
Hotel pickup? No
Inclusions: Boat tour with guide, complimentary tea & coffee before or after the tour
Guide? Yes – English speaking
Children? Yes
Wheelchair accessible? No
Best for: A traditional wildlife cruise with almost 40 years experience in the Daintree

Bruce Belcher & Son has been operating as a family business in the Daintree since 1987, and their wealth of knowledge about the area makes this tour a popular one with visitors to the Daintree. The departure point is close to Solar Whisper’s, and both tours cover the same lower section of the river.

We actually spoke to a group in our accommodation who’d done this tour, and they spoke very highly of it. As it runs a similar route to the Solar Whisper Cruise, you’re likely to see basically the same wildlife – with this tour boasting a 98% sighting success rate during the drier months of June-September. However, due to this being a more traditional vessel, you may not get quite as close-up as with Solar Whisper.

Crocodile Express

Price: From A$38 per adult/A$22 for children
Duration: 1hr
Departure time: Multiple departures between 8.30am and 3.30pm
Hotel pickup? No
Inclusions: 2x 1hr boat tour with guide
Guide? Yes – English speaking
Children? Yes
Wheelchair accessible? No
Best for: Value – your ticket gets you access to unlimited cruises on different sections of the river that can be taken at any time within 30 days.

Based in Daintree Village, your Crocodile Express ticket gives you 30 days of access to two cruise routes, in the Upper and Lower sections of the Daintree River.

The Crocodile Express was the first tour of its kind established on the river in 1979. In 1986, it was acquired by the current owners, and is a family-owned and operated business.

The Upper Daintree River Cruise departs from Daintree Village, taking in the bird and reptile life of the upper stretch of river. Once you’ve done, you can enjoy some sightseeing in the village before heading down to the Daintree Ferry port to complete your second cruise in the same secion as the Solar Whisper and Bob Belcher cruises operate.

Cape Tribulation Wilderness Cruises

Price: From A$30 per adult/A$22 for children
Duration: 1hr
Departure time: Multiple departures in the morning and afternoon – call for latest availability and to book.
Hotel pickup? No
Inclusions: Boat tour with guide
Guide? Yes – English speaking
Children? Yes
Wheelchair accessible? No
Best for: Access to a lesser-travelled part of the river with epic scenery

The only tour boat permitted in the Cape Tribulation area of Daintree National Park, Wilderness Cruises offers a window into near-untouched world heritage listed rainforest.

Making our way through the mangrove forest to reach the boat jetty, we were immediately immersed in the natural world. On the tour, we spotted two female crocodiles – one near the beginning of the route and one on a bank further along.

We enjoyed this tour a lot, and it was exciting to see a different section of the Daintree River. The views from the boat were gorgeous – think towering peaks in the distance above the mangrove forests that surround the river. While we did see more crocs on the Solar Whisper tour, the landscapes alone make this boat ride well worth it.

Daintree Boatman Tours

Price: A$72 per adult/A$50 for children
Duration: 2hrs
Departure time: 6.30-7am; 4-4.30pm (season dependent – usually closed in February & March)
Hotel pickup? No
Inclusions: Boat tour with guide (max. 10 people)
Guide? Yes – English speaking
Children? Yes – minimum age 6 years
Wheelchair accessible? No
Best for: An intimate, more in-depth exploration of the river

For a longer and more intimate wildlife watching experience on the Daintree River, the Daintree Boatman departs from Daintree Village in the morning and late afternoon.

With a maximum of 10 passengers on the small boat, Daintree Boatman Cruises offer the smallest group of all the Daintree river cruises. The cruise is also double the length of other cruises, taking you further along the river to look out for birds, crocodiles, fish and other creatures. There’s a particular focus on birdwatching, as a passion and special interest of Daintree Boatman owner, Murray.

The boat has a hybrid engine, meaning it’s quieter than regular vessels so causes less disturbance to the wildlife. For the best birdwatching opportunities, the boat doesn’t have a fixed roof (although a pop-up roof may be attached if it rains).

Daintree Wildlife Cruise FAQs

When’s the best time to take a wildlife cruise in the Daintree?

Honestly, it depends what you want to see. Crocodiles usually spend more time out of water during the drier, cooler months (June-September); but certain birds are more prevalent in the summer months. We had success seeing multiple crocodiles on both of our trips in June.

Are you guaranteed to see crocodiles in the Daintree River?

As with any wildlife, there’s never a 100% guarantee of seeing crocodiles. However, tours such as Solar Whisper and Bob Belcher offer a 98-99% success rate during the months of June-September, with the option of a complimentary return tour if you don’t see any crocs.

What should I take on a Daintree wildlife cruise?

Sunscreen, sunglasses, insect repellant, a waterproof jacket, flat shoes (for accessing the boats). Binoculars are great for a closer view, and a camera to capture your favourite wildlife sightings! Check out my Daintree packing guide for a full checklist of what you should bring on your trip.

How do I get to the Daintree River from Cairns?

The Daintree ferry crossing is around 1hr 30mins drive from Cairns, where some of the cruises above depart. Daintree Village is a further 15 minutes, and Cape Tribulation is around 50 minutes further north (including a ferry crossing)

Do Daintree wildlife tours operate in the rain?

Usually yes – but check with your individual tour provider.
