The Essential K’gari Packing List (For All Travel Styles)

Maheno Shipwreck on Kgari island

Planning a trip to K’gari? This essential K’gari packing list covers all kinds of tours, from day-trips to self-drive 4WD tours!

K’gari is a must visit destination for travellers on the east coast of Australia! What you’ll need to pack for your K’gari will depend on how long you’re going for, and whether you’re staying in hotels or camping. You can read more about different types of K’gari tours here.

The below packing lists cover all the common tour types and ways to travel in K’gari, so scroll down to find everything you need!

K’gari trip essentials

However long you’re spending on K’gari, these essential items should be in your bag!

  • SPF – ideally factor 50, because the sun out here takes no prisoners! We took a small bottle with us so we could reapply during the day and after swimming.
  • Hat & sunglasses for sun safety and comfort
  • Insect repellant
  • Reusable water bottle: Refill points are available at the K’gari resorts, campgrounds and day use areas; and you can also drink the freshwater from Eli Creek!
  • Camera – you’ll want to take plenty of photos of this beautiful place!

I’d also suggest bringing an inflatable floatie if you want to float down Eli Creek!

One-day tour packing list

In addition to the essentials listed above, here’s what you should be packing for a one-day K’gari tour. A day bag will be fine for this length of tour!

  • Swimwear – we wore our swimwear under our clothes to make the most of our time at swimming spots! We also didn’t bother taking dry underwear, as we’d be heading back to our campground facilities that night.
  • Towel for drying off after water activities (a quick-drying towel is a great lightweight option)
  • Sturdy footwear for walking
  • Beach shoes/sandals for water activities

2+ day tour (hotel accommodation)

A two-day K’gari tour will include a night on the island – and three, four and five night stays are also an option. In addition to the essentials listed above, here’s what to pack if you’re taking an overnight (or multiple night) tour and staying in hotels.

  • Swimwear
  • Towel (for beach and water activities)
  • Sturdy footwear
  • Beach shoes/sandals
  • Change of clothes (and underwear) for the amount of days of your trip
  • Casual evening clothes for dinner – optional, but recommended if you want to feel fresh in the evening!
  • Sturdy footwear for hiking and exploring.
  • Light jacket/long-sleeve, if you plan to be outside during the evening, as temperatures can drop at night
  • Personal toiletries – most hotels will provide the basics such as shower gel, but I always like to bring my own miniature bottles just in case.
  • Plug-in charger for devices

2+ day tour (camping)

If you’ve booked a two or three day camping tour, camping equipment will ususally be provided as part of the package – so no need to worry about packing a swag! Most of the packing list for a camping tour to K’gari is similar to the hotel accommodation tour, but with some additions to make your camping experience more comfortable.

  • Swimwear
  • Towel
  • Sturdy footwear
  • Beach shoes/sandals
  • Change of clothes – lightweight clothing that can be layered works well
  • Sturdy footwear
  • Warm clothes, as temperatures can drop during the night, especially during the winter months
  • Waterproof jacket – K’gari experiences rainy days, especially between January-March.
  • Personal toiletries – showers are available at campsites and day use areas
  • $2 coins to use the showers!
  • Portable charger
  • Flashlight or head torch
  • Snacks and drinks – BYO alcohol is allowed on these tours
  • Valid driving license if you’re on a self-drive tag along tour

Self-drive 4WD (hotels)

If you’re self-driving without a tour, there are additional safety considerations for exploring on your own schedule. Most hire companies will provide the driving essentials, but here’s what else you’ll need:

Car essentials

  • Valid driving license and hire details with emergency assistance contact
  • First aid kit for emergencies

Personal packing

  • Swimwear and quick-drying travel towel
  • Enough clothes for the length of your trip – lightweight, layerable clothing works best
  • Casual evening clothes for dinner – optional, but recommended if you want to feel fresh in the evening!
  • Sturdy footwear and beach shoes (sliders/flip flops)
  • Light jacket/long-sleeve, if you plan to be outside during the evening
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Personal toiletries – showers are available at campsites and day use areas
  • $2 coins to use the showers
  • Portable charger & cable charger for hotel rooms
  • Snacks and drinks – including extra drinking water

Self-drive 4WD (camping)

Most 4WD hire companies offer camping equipment hire for $30 per day, which will include some of the camping gear essentials (usually excluding a sleeping bag). If you choose this option, check with your provider beforehand to see what’s included. If you’re taking your own vehicle, I’ve listed the necessary camping gear alongside personal packing items.

Car essentials

  • Valid driving license and hire details with emergency assistance contact
  • First aid kit for emergencies

Camping gear

  • Tent/swag: Make sure you have all the parts needed, including pegs, poles and sandbags.
  • Sleeping bag and roll mat – sleeping bags aren’t usually included in hire packages, so make sure you check ahead of time!
  • Camping stove, cooking equipment, plates and utensils if you’re planning to cook your own meals at camp
  • Food and drink – for cooking and snacks. There’s a general store at K’gari Beach Resort but prices are higher than on the mainland.
  • Drinking water – refill points are available at resorts, campsites and day use areas but I’d recommend carrying extra water just in case.
  • Flashlight and/or headtorch
  • Esky/cooler bag to keep food and drink cool
  • Camping chairs – if you want something to sit on!

Personal packing

  • Swimwear and quick-drying travel towel
  • Enough clothes for the length of your trip – lightweight, layerable clothing works best
  • Sturdy footwear and beach shoes (sliders/flip flops)
  • Warm clothes
  • Waterproof clothing
  • Personal toiletries – showers are available at campsites and day use areas
  • $2 coins to use the showers
  • Portable charger
