K’gari Explorer Review: Cheapest Fraser Island Day Tour
Looking for a budget-friendly way to explore K’gari in a short space of time? Find out what to expect on a one day tour, with an honest K’gari Explorer review!
Formerly known as Fraser Island, the World Heritage-listed sand island is a popular spot on the travel trail, known for its vast beaches, unique ecosystem and free-roaming dingo population. On our previous Sydney to Cairns roadtrip, we had to skip K’gari due to time constraints. Still firmly on my mind, we decided to plan a visit later in our trip. With budgets running low, we searched for the cheapest way to visit K’gari.
Taking a one-day group guided tour in a 4WD coach is usually the cheapest way to explore K’gari. We booked our tour with K’Gari Explorer via GetYourGuide. At the time of booking it was the cheapest option at £114pp (approximately AU$228) on a special last minute deal. Current prices start from AU$261pp.
This tour departs from Rainbow Beach, but K’gari Explorer also run tours from Hervey Bay if that’s more convenient for you. Tours departing from Rainbow Beach tend to be a bit cheaper, so your departure location is worth considering if you’re visiting K’gari on a backpacker budget.

Travelling to K’gari
After a pit stop in the bakery to grab our breakfast, we boarded our big blue chariot for the day’s activities. The journey from Rainbow Beach to the ferry doesn’t take long, and the ferry ride itself is a short hop. As soon as we were out of the van, it seemed like we were ready to get back on.
Due to high tide, we weren’t able to take the beach route, and instead found ourselves bouncing around along the bumpy access track to K’gari Beach Resort. A quick toilet stop, and we were on our way to the first activity – via a dingo sighting on the side of the road!
The K’gari Explorer 4WD coach seats up to 40 people, and despite the bumpy roads is a pretty comfortable ride. The large windows allow for great views through the beach and forest trails.

Lake Mckenzie
Lake Mckenzie has to be one of the most stunning swimming spots I’ve seen in Australia! A ‘perched’ pure rainwater lake with a white sandy beach, the water here is irresistibly inviting.
The lake is around 40mins drive from the resort. We took the short walk to the shore and threw off our day clothes to take a dip. (There are toilets to change in at the lake car park, but to maximise time in the water, we wore our swimmers under our clothes.)
Starting off shallow, the calm water was cool and refreshing on a hot Queensland day. At the shore, the clear water is perfect for paddling and bathing. The lake drops off quite quickly for keen swimmers, and plenty of beach-goers had paddleboards and inflatables – which I’d definitely do next time!

Wanggoolba Creek
From beach to rainforest – the next stop on our tour was Wanggoolba Creek. An easy 700m boardwalk, the pathway cuts through some of K’gari’s wild inland natural forest. The whole island is sand-based, so it’s pretty amazing how well the trees and plants flourish here.
John gave us a great insight into the ecosystems and aboriginal history of the creek. He also shared a fascinating bit of information on how the trees in this forest have ended up across the world, including London. No spoilers, though – you’ll have to ask him yourself!
The walk was pretty short, but it was great to get into the green side of K’gari. We were lucky enough to spot lizards and skinks darting about in the forest and basking in the sun’s rays.

Lunch at K’gari Beach Resort
On the K’gari Explorer day tour, lunch is included – a buffet setup at K’gari Beach Resort.
The buffet offered a handful of main dishes, including a vegetable mild coconut curry, chicken thighs, tomato pasta and a selection of cold meats, cheeses and salads. Buffets can be hit or miss, but I found the food to be of generally good quality – I ended up grabbing seconds of the curry and doubled up on bread rolls!
The resort has a full bar with alcoholic and soft drinks available to purchase, but there’s also free water, tea and coffee. We had plenty of time left after eating, so we went over to the general store to grab an ice cream and souvenir magnet!
After lunch, it was time to take to the sands, as we went full-tilt driving the shoreline of 75 Mile Beach!

Maheno Shipwreck
The Maheno shipwreck is one of the iconic K’gari images. The SS Maheno was built in 1905 and served as a cargo and hospital ship until 1935, when she was sold to Japan for scrap. However, en route to Japan, a towing chain snapped and the Maheno drifted to the shore of K’gari, where she’s sat ever since.
Seeing the shipwreck up close was really cool – it’s much bigger than I expected from looking at pictures!
The downside of these visits were the number of people there – it seemed like every tour in the vicinity arrived at the same time! Even some of the smaller tour groups seemed to visit at the same time, so if you wanted it all to yourself, you’d need to consider self-driving to visit after the tour groups leave.

The Pinnacles
Another short stop on 75 Mile Beach, The Pinnacles are a collection of ancient sand dunes and stacks that bring vibrant colour to the K’gari landscapes. This was very much an ‘out and back on the coach quickly’ stop, but it was cool to see how nature has shaped the dunes of the island.

Eli Creek
The final stop of the tour took us to Eli Creek, where families and travellers bring their 4x4s and gazebos to set up for a relaxing afternoon. The crystal clear water flows gently towards the sea, and you can walk or float along the shallow waterway. Heading up the boardwalk, it felt a little like a theme park ride – but luckily, it wasn’t overly crowded once we got going.
The clear water is super fresh and suitable for drinking, and I filled up my water bottle at the mouth. Watching the banks for telltale movements of wildlife, we slowly made our way down the creek before returning to the bus to make our way towards the end of our trip.
The itinerary lists an optional scenic flight as an alternative to Eli Creek, but our tour wasn’t able to access this due to another group arriving ahead of us. So if the scenic flight is a must-do for you, be aware it’s not guaranteed on this one day tour.

Summary: Is a one day K’gari tour worth taking?
If you’re short on time or backpacking on a budget, a one day tour to K’gari is a great introduction to the highlights of the island. You do get a reasonable amount of time at the stops, although we’d have loved to spend even longer at Lake Mckenzie!
John was a fantastic guide, finding the perfect balance between being friendly and informative but also letting guests enjoy the island on their own. He gave just the right amount of context for what we were seeing, without overloading us at any point.
The downsides were similar to any large group tour: locations were quite busy, and we seemed to spend more time on the bus than anything else. K’gari is a large island, so it’s understandable on a one day tour, but if you’re looking for a slower-paced and more immersive experience, you could consider stretching your budget to take a longer two- or three-day tour.
