Why Horror Fans Shouldn’t Miss Nightmare Horror Bar in Prague
If you’re into horror movies and/or metal music, don’t miss Nightmare Horror Bar in Prague!
Rock music and horror movies are two things I’m pretty enthusiastic about. So when I heard about Nightmare Horror Bar, it was clearly a must-visit destination on our Prague trip.
With my birthday falling on the last day of our weekend in Prague, I spent the day celebrating in the most me way possible – a beer spa treatment, vegetarian meal, and cocktails in a spooky underground metal bar. The perfect way to turn [undisclosed age] in a new city.
From the moment you step through the door of Nightmare Horror Bar, it’s obvious that you’re about to immerse yourself in a shrine to terrifying pop culture moments. Making your way down a winding staircase decorated with historical horror movie posters, spooky sound effects set the scene.
Entering the bar in dimmed red lighting, you’re immediately met by life-size figures of iconic horror characters. The bar is spread out through multiple rooms, each one adorned with replica props and models. In the central room, a large projector plays B-movies and compilations from the last 50 years of horror cinema. The soundtrack? Classic rock and metal, of course.
On your route to the toilets, you’ll encounter severed hands hanging from the ceiling, with the Jigsaw puppet welcoming you to the red-lit bathrooms. There’s also a small games room with pool and table football, and an Alien Extermination arcade game.
The extensive theming makes this venue just as much a horror museum as it is a bar. It’d be impossible to name every movie plastered on the walls, ceilings and in hidden alcove. However, popular favourites with full-on life-size tributes include Friday 13th, American Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Exorcist, IT, and the Halloween series.
Alongside the usual beers and spirits, Nightmare Horror Bar has an extensive cocktail menu. Aptly named after iconic scary movies, you can order them in ‘Spooky Size’ (regular), or ‘Slasher Size’ (a larger glass with extra alcohol). As a rum-lover, my first choice was ‘Michael’s Knife’ – with spiced rum, dark rum, pineapple juice, sweet and sour lemonade and grenadine. Served in a themed glass, of course.
I also gave the ‘Cenobite’s Puzzle‘ a go – basically a whisky and lemonade. While the cocktails aren’t as premium as some of the city’s specialist cocktail bars, I enjoyed them both as sweet, flavourful alcoholic drinks. ‘Spooky Size’ drinks prices range from CZK149-179 – so around €6-7 per cocktail. There’s also a range of more simple, traditional cocktails including a Dark and Stormy or Tequila Sunrise for CZK139.
The majority of cocktails and around half of the shots are vegan-friendly, clearly marked on the menu. For non-drinkers, there are three non-alcoholic cocktail options, Staropramen 0%, and a good range of soft drinks. Prices are reasonable and in line with regular Prague bars.
Nightmare doesn’t serve food, but if you get peckish, they have bar snacks including crisps, pretzels and cheese on toast.
We didn’t make a reservation and on a Sunday night, the bar was pretty quiet – however, if you’re visiting at a busier time (Fridays and Saturdays) or with a sizeable group, they do take reservations. There are also occasional events taking place, including horror movie trivia quizzes – check the website for details of what’s on.
As a horror fan, I was impressed with the level of detail in Nightmare Horror Bar. The figures and props combined with the red lighting create a spooky atmosphere reminiscent of the best horror movie settings in the game. From the mainstream to more niche, there’s loads to explore and take in as you make your way around the rooms.
A spooky, unique and immersive drinking experience, I’d recommend adding this to your Prague itinerary!
