Lost Souls Vegan Pizza, Camden

Eating a pizza with a beer at Lost Boys, Camden

I accepted an invitation to an evening at Lost Souls Pizzeria without even looking up what it was about, to be honest. Most of the time, you’ll get me with the word ‘pizza’ alone. So my base level of expectation was a decent night with friends, food and drinks. What I wasn’t expecting is how freakin’ awesome this Camden spot is, and how much you need to go there.

*complimentary meal*

Described as a ‘vampire-themed pizzeria’, the theme here is basically 80s gothic wonderfulness, with a big helping of film geekery and a tasty menu. With an original site in Archway, Lost Souls Pizzeria brought their dark delicious magic to Camden in 2018, the perfect setting for this alternative eatery.

Inspired by the Frog Brother comic book store from the 1987 movie The Lost Boys (makes sense, huh?), the dark walls are covered in comic book and film-related memorabilia. Downstairs, the team are currently working on their ‘Cabin In The Woods’, a bar space that also hosts film showings and events.

To get into my groove, I chose the High Priestess Daquiri from the drinks menu – a sweet yet punchy cocktail. The beer and wine menu is small but selective, including a few choice IPAs and a Heineken alcohol free option.

Lost Souls Pizzeria offer both a vegan and non-vegan menu, and we decided to give the vegan one a try. I mean, Veganuary and all.

Our group picked out a selection of starters to share. The Dough Bites were in keeping with the gothic vibes at Lost Souls and were perfect dipped into the rich tomato ragu.

The Roasted 4 Skins (haha) dish consisted of four (get it) potato skins, served with BBQ sauce, vegan parmesan and sour cream. My favourite, though, were the spicy cauliflower bites with a blue cheese dip. Since I’ve been mostly-veggie, cauliflower has developed as a serious contender for a favourite vegetable, and these were perfectly cooked and seasoned. I could have eaten another bowl, easily.

In the spirit of all things spooky, the pizza I chose was aptly named ‘Death’. Yup. The charcoal base was topped with no-zarella vegan cheese, no-rizo, peppers, onions and chilli flakes. I have to admit, cheese is the thing I always struggle with when trying vegan alternatives to my favourite foods. So far, I’ve not found anything that competes with the real deal. But in terms of pizza, I think my Lost Souls pizza came closer than I’ve found so far.

The generously applied No-Rizo was a slightly strange consistency to me at first, but the taste was enjoyable, and I loved the heat levels from the chilli flakes. The charcoal crust was crisp and crunchy, perfect dipped in the vegan sour cream dip left over from the starters.

I also switched out a slice to try ‘The Sun’, featuring cauliflower, kale, hot sauce and Snootchie blue cheese dip. The flavours were fantastic, particularly the dip, and I’ll definitely order the full thing next time I go…

In terms of aesthetic and a great menu, Lost Souls gets it so perfectly bang-on for Camden. The vegan options are plentiful and delicious, and it’s a super cool place to hang out. The charcoal pizza offers substance as well as style, and I’d highly recommend this to anyone who likes good food and living on the dark side a little…
