God’s Own Junkyard, Walthamstow

God's Own Junkyard neon signs, Walthamstow

What ya gonna do with all that junk? Put it in a big ol’ warehouse with wall to ceiling neon signs, obviously.

God’s Own Junkyard has been on my ‘to visit’ list for so damn long. I live a short bus ride from Walthamstow, and have to wonder why I hadn’t visited before this weekend. Some of my favourite bloggers and Time Out magazine alike have raved about it, and a few people were actually pretty shocked I hadn’t visited yet. Clearly I definitely seem like the kind of person to be all about the neon (maybe because I totally am).

Finally, on a drizzly Saturday afternoon, we hopped on the Victoria line from King’s Cross to actually go and check the place out.

I stepped through the doors, and instantly squealed ‘THIS IS THE COOLEST PLACE EVER’. Because I decided I basically want to live there.

The junkyard began with Chris Bracey, who sadly passed away in 2014. He was known as ‘The Neon Man’, creating iconic, neon art pieces both from scratch and from salvage. God’s Own Junkyard is filled with all kinds of new, old and vintage neon signage and props, from fairgrounds, circuses, movie sets and more.

The result? It basically feels like Vegas and the Moulin Rouge rolled up into one amazing little space. Bright, colourful and creative, the signs span from small letters to giant signs that hang from the ceiling. Everywhere you look, explosions of colour and all kinds of odd props.

As well as all the amazing signs to delve into, at the weekend you can sit down with a coffee in the amazingly named ‘Rolling Scones’ cafe.

I feel like I don’t need to say much more, because a) Just look at the pictures, and b) You totally need to visit for yourself. It’s quite a way out of the city centre to make a special visit, but if you’re exploring Walthamstow (which I totally recommend), it’s an awesome way to spend a little time gawping at ALL THE COLOURS. I totally fell in love with the place, and think you might do too.
