Girl skating on Ice Rink at Queen's House Greenwich

I first discovered Greenwich earlier this year, through wandering the market and taking in the views from the Observatory. It’s a really lovely part of London, and one I recommend regularly to anyone visiting.

This winter, there’s a new Greenwich attraction in town that’s perfect for getting into the festive spirit. I’ve always liked ice skating, and try and do it at least once every Christmas. I was super excited to be invited to the press launch of the Queen’s House Ice Rink to be one of the first to try it out.

The Queen’s House Ice Rink is the only outdoor ice rink in Central London that you’ll find south of the river – a fact that definitely surprised me! The UNESCO World Heritage site of the Queen’s House itself, lit up in pink and purple as the sun went down, is a pretty special backdrop to skate beside. And opposite, enjoy views across to the buzzing heart of the City of London.

For children and beginner skaters (and also me), there’s a helping hand in the form of penguins, available for hire at a small extra charge. Whether you’re clinging on to the barrier or cutting your way through the centre of the rink, it’s a stunning place to skate and bring on those festive vibes.

After our skate, we grabbed some mulled wine and delicious vegan gingerbread biscuits from the museum café (open during normal museum hours). If you’re visiting in the evening, you can also refuel at stalls around the rink.

Tickets are £16 (peak) and £13.50 (off-peak) for Adults; and £8 (peak) and £6.75 (off-peak) for children. Discounts also available for students, under 25s and members. Penguin skate aid hire is £5 per session. Skate hire is included, and each session on the ice is 45 minutes long. Tickets can be booked in advance online.
