A Boat Trip Around Comino, Malta
Crystal clear, beautiful blue waters. The sun shining. Cocktails in pineapples and giant ice creams that I couldn’t even finish. Taking a boat trip around Malta’s Comino Island was pure paradise.
Having grown up by the seaside, I’ve always been a bit of a water baby. But Malta’s beautiful blue seas are something I’ve never experienced before. Basically, if you visit Malta, you just have to take a boat trip.
We did ours with Oh Yeah Malta, based in Mellieha Bay (near where we were staying), and it was ā¬13 each for the trip. The boat left at 10.30am, and came back at around 4. Which made it pretty good value for the amount of time we got on board!
As well as the water, we also got to check out all the caves around Comino, a small island between Malta and Gozo. Smuggler’s Cave is a particularly well known one. As we were on a big boat, we didn’t get to go in – if I go back to Malta, I’ll definitely do one of the smaller cave tours too.
TOP TIP: Make sure you get to the boat early to get the best seats, and leave something (non-valuable, like a towel) there to save your spot. We were on the top deck so we had awesome views, and were also sat away from all the families with children on the lower deck.
I had a seriously HUGE ice cream at the Blue Lagoon, our first stop of the day.
A small bay with shallow, clear azure water, the Blue Lagoon is considered one of the most beautiful spots in the Maltese island. And despite the crowds that flock there, it feels like a little slice of paradise. The perfect spot for our first snorkel, we also relaxed on the boat deck (the beach area was FAR too busy, and also, not a beach).
We snorkelled our way across the bay and explored a cave, got first aid for a lost toenail (not mine), and snacked on the ham rolls we’d made from the breakfast buffet at the hotel.
It was actual bliss.

The second stop of the day was the RIDICULOUSLY stunning Crystal Lagoon, for a spot of swimming and snorkelling. Seeing all the way to the bottom was actually incredible.
I’d never actually snorkelled before, but the boat had equipment you can hire for a few Euros, and I got to grips with it pretty quickly. It was amazing to see the fish swimming just below my outstretched arms, and I spent a lot of time just lying down in the water watching the underwater world go by.
Classy on-board bar provision…at ā¬2 a can though, who’s complaining?
As you’ll know if you watch the video, THIS MAN HAS DOGS ON HIS BOAT. He actually ran the caves speedboat trip that was an optional extra on the tour but we didn’t have enough money on us to do it. And therefore, no dog boat for me. SIGH. Next time.
Sure, there’s more to Malta than water activities. You’ll hear a lot about the cities and their architecture, but Valetta actually disappointed me in comparison to the beauty of nature that surrounds the island coastlines. If you’re visiting Malta, I’d definitely, definitely recommend you take a boat trip around the islands.

Beautiful pictures! I went to Malta last Christmas and we did the boat trip to Gozo and Comino and I still can’t shake the image of how beautiful that water was around the Blue Lagoon! Unfortunately we had a really windy day and I had such bad sea sickness – it’s annoying as it kind of ruined my experience of Gozo but luckily beautiful Comino did salvage those memories a bit! x

I sort of wanted to do Gozo as well but decided to just do the shorter one, with more chill out time! Aw no, sucks that you had the sea sickness š Glad you managed to enjoy Comino a bit at least! x
I really wanted to do this when we were in Malta a couple of months ago – had the trip booked and everything! (Same one as you too by the sounds of things!) But when we turned up on the morning of the trip, the boat has already gone ! After selling us tickets, they’d changed the departure time to an hour earlier. They did, to be fair, try to make it up to us by taking us out on a smaller boat to meet the big one… and the smaller one broke down! It definitely wasn’t our day, so we cut out losses and headed back to the hotel pool – – definitely another time though, it looks gorgeous!
Ah no that sounds rather unlucky! I hope the hotel pool was great too though!

Wow those blue! So stunning! I’ve never been to Malta yet, but I’ve heard a lot of great things about it. Someday soon hopefully. x
