Affordable Accommodation in Copenhagen: Steel House Hostel
Looking for the best hostel in Copenhagen? Got you covered.
When I first looked at going to Copenhagen on a budget, I knew that a dorm room in a hostel would be the best way to maximise my limited funds. Although I’m a bit too much of a grown up to cram into a twelve-person party dorm, I’m happy to find myself a room shared with a few other travellers.
Copenhagen’s Steel House Hostel bills itself as a ‘luxury hostel’, offering dorms and privates at what I’d say seem like pretty affordable places – I paid £52 for a bed in a small dorm for two nights. It felt like a bit of a ‘grown up’ hostel experience, without the grotty, noisy stereotype that some hostels invoke.
Location
Steel House hostel is located in the Vesterbro area, to the west of the city centre. Nearby, you’ll find Kødbyen, the meatpacking district, which has plenty of stylish restaurants and bars as well as art galleries and creative spaces.
The hostel is also minutes from Vesterport Station, six minutes walk from Tivoli theme park, and about half an hour walk from Nyhavn.
Checking In
The check-in process is super easy, as it’s self service on a selection of iPads in the lobby. You can also download the Steel House app to have the key sent to your phone. TECHNOLOGY. Check in is from 3pm daily (and checkout by 11am).

Bar & Lounge Area
Steel House has plenty of seating in its common areas, including tables and a cosy lounge area. This was probably my favourite place in the hostel, with big comfy sofas and colourful patterned chairs – definite living room vibes. Except I probably wouldn’t be sat next to a couple of strangers playing ‘touch the tonsils’ in my living room…
The bar had a decent selection of drinks, affordably priced compared to some Copenhagen bars. On Thursdays and Fridays from 7pm-8pm, it’s happy hour, which meant two for one drinks. The bar was pretty quiet on Wednesday and Thursday, but when I headed back Friday to kill some time before my flight, it was pretty busy and lively.

Steel House Hostel Dorm Rooms
The dorms at Steel House accommodate either four or six people. I stayed in a four-person female dorm, and when I arrived I was alone so had the chance to snap a couple of pictures. Although quite small, the large windows made it feel open and the décor is modern and clean.
The beds are ‘pod’ style – with enough wall to block off your head when sleeping, which gave a bit of privacy – something I always appreciate when sharing with others. I found the size to be fine, although someone larger might struggle a little bit to find room to manouver.
Each bed had its own light, two plug sockets and a pocket on the wall to put your essentials in. The mattress was very comfortable, and I had two pretty good nights’ sleep in my cosy pod.
The dorm rooms have their own bathroom – ours had a (pretty decent) shower, toilet and sink. Shower gel and handwash in dispensers are also provided.
Steel House provide linen and a towel, which are changed every four days if you’re staying for more than that (and, obviously, between each guest!).

Facilities
Free WiFi – which was really fast and reliable!
If you’re looking to do Copenhagen on a budget by cooking your own food, you can make use of Steel House’s kitchen facilities for 20DKK (about £2.41). I had a nose into the kitchen from the outside, and it’s pretty modern with plenty of space for cooking and eating.
Want to do some laundry? That’s 20DKK too.
Steel House also has a gym and pool area, costing an extra…you guessed it,20DKK. I didn’t use it – but it’s a nice addition and gives the impression of a ‘luxury hostel’ rather than just a cheap place to lay your head.
If you want to store your luggage before checking in or after you check out, there are lockers available at an extra charge.
Copenhagen is a famously bike-friendly city and Steel House offer bike rental, again at an extra cost.

Should you stay at Steel House Hostel Copenhagen?
If you’re looking for an affordable room in a small dorm, in a clean, modern and welcoming hostel, absolutely yes. The communal areas reminded me of a contemporary boutique hotel, and the extra additions of a gym and pool makes it perfect for someone who fancies quality accommodation in Copenhagen without a massive price tag.
