The Best Vegan Sandwiches in London: Coven of Wiches

A close-up of a plant-based sandwich from Coven of Wiches in London, cut in half and held up against a grassy background. The sandwich features toasted bread filled with crispy plant-based meat, pickles, and a creamy vegan sauce.

Looking for the best vegan sandwiches in London? Head to Walthamstow and pay Coven of Wiches a visit!

I’m always on the lookout for the tastiest plant-based spots to eat in London. I’ve already sung the praises of The Black Heart’s incredible vegan Sunday roast and know a thing or two about vegan pizza in London. But for something a little more casual and takeaway friendly, Coven of Wiches had been on my ‘to visit’ radar for a while.

Tucked away at the back of Walthamstow’s Wood Street indoor market, Coven of Wiches serves up plant-based sandwiches from their deli and pickle house. Some sandwiches on the menu switch out on a weekly basis, with popular stalwarts hanging around longer and limited edition specials – which means there’s always something new to try.

Coven of Wiches has been a cult favourite for plant-based lunchers in North West London since opening in 2023. As the word began to spread, more Londoners headed over for their fix, and Time Out named Coven of Wiches one of the best restaurants in Walthamstow this summer. So of course, I had to go and try it out.

On the menu when we visited:

  • The Reuben: House vastrami on sourdough rye, with gouda, kraut, remolade and pickles
  • The Dawg: 8in vegan frank covered in 12hr chilli sin carne, served on a sub roll with fried onions, crispy onions, jalapenos, ketchup, mustard and tortilla chips
  • A.G.A.T.H.A: Aubergine schnitzel, hot raclette, avocado, tomato, gremoulata, served on middle eastern bread with aioli, pickles, garlic croutons and jalapenos
  • VFB: Vish fingers in a buttered roll, with cocktail sauce, shoestring fries and pickles
  • Reubini: A smaller version of the Reuben

Also on the menu are a bunch of sides including a pot of pickles, kimchi and potato salad. For sweet tooths, there’s an ice cream sandwich and ice cream sundae to enjoy. Plus, there are beers, wines, spirits and soft drinks to wash it all down with.

Sandwiches cost £9-10 each, although there are always a couple of smaller sandwich options on the menu between £6-7. So if you’ve got a smaller appetite or you’re eating on a budget, these are great options. (my friend ordered the VFB from the ‘smaller’ menu and it was still a really good size!)

The shop has a few seats inside, but our group of seven decided to make the most of a nice sunny day and take our sandwiches to a nearby park.

Opening up my foil-packed sarnie, my first thought was… ‘how on earth will this fit in my mouth?’. The portion sizes take ‘generous’ to a new level. These sandwiches are HUGE. Honestly, I actually had to save some of mine to eat later in the day, I was so full. Packed to the brim with all the tasty fillings, the value for money at Coven of Wiches is amazing.

I’d ordered The Reuben (£9), as I have fond pre-veggie memories of eating my first ever Reuben sandwich in a New York deli and it blowing my mind. Coven of Wiches get the Reuben experience spot on, with the perfect combination of vegan ‘meat’ and sauerkraut. Nothing tastes overwhelming, and the sharpness of the kraut is a perfect accompaniment to the saltiness of the (perfectly cooked) vastrami.

Ashley ordered The Dawg (£10) and it was even bigger than my Reuben. You can see the scale comparison in this video – genuinely, it must have been nearly the size of my forearm.

Obviously, I had to have a taste. The 12hr slow cooked chilli ‘sin carne’ is deliciously rich and warming, and you’re left with a whole mess of chilli to sweep up with the tortillas afterwards.

We did order the Potatty Salad (£4) as well, but unfortunately the herb blend with pickles didn’t quite hit the spot for me. If you’re wanting to try the sides, I’d recommend sharing a sandwich and a side or two, as it’s all super filling!

If you’re looking for top-tier plant-based sandwiches in London, Coven of Wiches is absolutely worth visiting. Hearty, sloppy, deliciousness to cure even the hardiest of hangovers. Get to Walthamstow, and experience the magic of the Coven for yourself!
